Touch Trust and it’s Potential to Benefit  People who are Suffering with Dementia

Dementia is an increasing concern in today’s society. There are over 100 types of dementia of which Alzheimer’s is just one. It is about progressive brain damage for which as yet there is no cure.

For many reasons it seems to be on the increase and with increased life expectancy and allied conditions such as strokes, it is imperative that we look at this pressing issue with love and compassion and good resources and experienced expertise.

Life style and environments are shown to help manage the condition and improve quality of life, both for the sufferers, but also for the carers and families. It is in these areas that Touch Trust can make a difference. It is here we know our expertise and experience can help and needs to be exploited now.

Touch Trust programs provides holistic, fun, music and movement sessions for a range of disabilities (including dementia, they are designed to help  the physical aspects - mobility, circulation,  endorphin production, attention and relaxation ; the emotional aspects - wellbeing, self esteem , enjoyment and wellbeing; and the social aspects –communication, connection ,group approval and belonging , both for the sufferer and the carer.

Our programs are unique and respected and based on the work of the genius and innovator, Laban. He was the Father of Modern Dance and Movement Analysis and Personality mapping. He believed that movement helped the physical and emotional wellbeing of people and his work has been used here, but more extensively in the USA, where his influence is huge especially in therapy.

We use music in our sessions and touch (our programs were originally titled “touch therapy”) and include some fun movement if this is possible. Our programs are holistic and social and work in conjunction with medical expertise , providing the human effective dimension which can make all the difference to quality of life.

We have three programs which bring about positive outcomes for sufferers and their carers. (Looking after the nurses, the carers, the families is essential to what we are trying to achieve) ;-

  1. Communicating Through Touch-

One day training workshop for carers & professionals.

This provides a fun day , but with practical  activities  and

                            techniques to help relaxation ,wellbeing and mindfulness ;

refreshing, connecting  and recreative  for  both sufferer and

                            carer.

( OCN Level 1 can be achieved for those who wish ,within

                                   the day.)

  1. Recreative Touch Therapy sessions-

Sessions for people who are suffering with dementia

These can be one to one sessions or group sessions at our Centre in

        WMC or elsewhere.

  • These beneficial sessions run for 30-60 minutes and are fun and relaxing and are seen to help those sufferers in moderate and advanced stages of   dementia,(and their carers.)

  1. Keep Moving  sessions for the more able elderly-

These recreative sessions help mobility, balance, and relaxation

, connection and a positive attitudes for health and happiness in a

           nurturing and social environment.

  1. Training Program for allied professionals and carers-

30-60 hours training program  for those wishing to lead Touch trust sessions.

(OCN validated, Level 2, 3 units ,Level 3 ,6 units.)

Our experience over many years has shown the benefit of our Touch Trust programs .

Many years ago, working in wards for very ill patients suffering from dementia in what was then Whitchurch Hospital; one small scale research showed sleep patterns improved as a result of our program.

Before that in Ely Hospital, another small scale study showed there was evidence of relaxation after the sessions.

More recently in St David’s Hospital, there were   testimonials   from the staff of increased enjoyment, focus and connection, and even improvement in eating. (A husband who visited his wife daily, said that both during and after the session, he felt he had found his wife again!)

We feel now is the time to turn our attention and effort onto this section of society as well as maintaining our traditional focus which is on those people with profound disabilities and extremely challenging behaviour –in which we have been so successful.

Please contact us if you are interested in a “taster” session, a workshop or a pilot /trial project.
